6mm Polycarbonate Sheets – Durable Greenhouse Glazing and Light-Duty Roofing
6mm polycarbonate is a stronger, more durable upgrade to 4mm. It offers improved rigidity while still providing excellent light transmission, making it ideal for greenhouses, cold frames, shed windows, and light-duty outdoor glazing.
It can also be used for small roofs with minimal exposure but is not suitable for pergolas, lean-tos or structural roofing. For those projects, 10mm, 16mm or 25mm are more appropriate.
Best Uses for 6mm Polycarbonate
6mm is suitable for:
-
Stronger greenhouse glazing
-
Cold frames and propagation units
-
Shed windows and workshop glazing
-
Garden cloches and protective covers
-
Light-duty DIY roofing in sheltered areas
-
Indoor glazing and partitions
6mm is not recommended for:
-
Pergola roofs
-
Lean-to roofs attached to the house
-
Carports or exposed outdoor structures
-
High-wind areas
-
Projects requiring significant insulation
Why Choose 6mm Polycarbonate
-
Higher rigidity compared to 4mm, reducing flex and improving durability.
-
Excellent light transmission, ideal for growing environments.
-
Lightweight and easy for one person to work with.
-
Provides better impact resistance than thinner sheets.
-
UV-protected to prevent yellowing and extend outdoor life.
-
A cost-effective upgrade when you need strength without the price of 10mm or 16mm.
Available Options
Your range may include:
-
Clear 6mm multiwall sheets
-
Common lengths such as 2m, 2.5m, 3m, or 4m
-
Standard multiwall sheet widths based on your stock
Installation Advice
To get the best results from 6mm polycarbonate:
-
Cut using a utility knife for short cuts or a fine-tooth saw for longer cuts.
-
Tape the open ends to prevent moisture and debris entering the sheet.
-
Do not overtighten fixings, as polycarbonate needs room for thermal expansion.
-
Ensure the UV-protected surface faces outwards.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Using 6mm for pergolas or lean-to roofs. While stronger than 4mm, it is still not suitable for roofing exposed to weather.
-
Forgetting to tape open ends, which leads to condensation or algae buildup.
-
Using incorrect fixings or overtightening screws.
-
Leaving the sheet unsupported by glazing bars on longer spans.
-
Assuming 6mm offers insulation — it provides minimal thermal performance.
Choosing a Better Thickness if Needed
If your project requires more strength or insulation, consider:
-
10mm for light roofing, carports and budget outdoor structures.
-
16mm for pergolas, lean-tos and general outdoor roofing.
-
25mm for conservatories or any project where insulation matters most.
