10mm Polycarbonate Sheets – Strong, Lightweight Roofing for Carports, Sheds and Budget Outdoor Projects
10mm polycarbonate is a popular choice for light-to-medium-duty roofing where strength, durability and affordability need to be balanced. It offers significantly more rigidity than 4mm or 6mm while remaining lightweight and easy to handle, making it suitable for carports, sheds, porch covers and basic outdoor roofing projects.
Although versatile, 10mm is not the best option for pergolas, lean-tos attached to houses or more exposed structures. For those projects, 16mm or 25mm will provide better strength, insulation and noise reduction.
Best Uses for 10mm Polycarbonate
10mm is suitable for:
-
Carports and vehicle shelters
-
Shed and workshop roofs
-
Porch roofs and garden shelters
-
Simple lean-to structures in sheltered areas
-
Budget-friendly outdoor roofing
-
Covered walkways
-
Canopies for bikes, bins, firewood or storage
10mm is not recommended for:
-
Large pergolas
-
Lean-to roofs attached to a house
-
High-wind or coastal locations
-
Projects needing strong insulation or reduced noise
-
Conservatories
Why Choose 10mm Polycarbonate
-
Stronger and more rigid than 4mm or 6mm, reducing flex and movement.
-
Lightweight and easy for one person to lift and install.
-
Good balance between cost, strength and light transmission.
-
Suitable for many everyday roofing projects around the garden.
-
UV-protected for long-lasting performance outdoors.
-
A sensible “middle-ground” option when 16mm strength is not essential.
Available Options
-

-
Common lengths such as 2m, 2.5m, 3m, 4m or 6m
-

Installation Advice
To get the best results when installing 10mm polycarbonate:
-
Cut using a fine-tooth saw for clean, accurate edges.
-
Tape and cap the open ends to prevent moisture entering the flutes.
-
Use suitable glazing bars for full support and secure fixing.
-
Allow for thermal expansion to avoid buckling in warm weather.
-
Position the UV-coated side facing outward.
-
Follow recommended spans to prevent sagging.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Using 10mm on large pergolas or exposed lean-to roofs, which require stronger 16mm or 25mm sheets.
-
Installing without glazing bars or proper fixings, causing movement or leaks.
-
Forgetting to seal the open ends, leading to condensation inside the sheet.
-
Overtightening screws, which restricts movement and can cause cracking over time.
-
Assuming 10mm provides high insulation — thicker sheets perform better.
Choosing a Better Thickness if Needed
If your project requires higher strength or insulation, consider:
-
16mm for pergolas, lean-to roofs and general outdoor roofing.
-
25mm for conservatories, insulated structures and noise reduction.
-
6mm if you only need glazing strength, not roofing strength.
